Description
Ukuya is a platform for building community-based solutions for companies, universities, professional networks, and volunteer communities. The system helps organizations digitize workflows, improve communication, collect data, build user communities, and launch solutions for HR, learning, CRM, job portals, alumni networks, volunteer matching, supply chain, logistics, finance, and e-commerce. The core product idea is software built around people, their roles, relationships, and shared activities.
Task
The platform had to support different organization types and business scenarios while remaining flexible and fast to customize for each client. Key technical challenges included a complex role model, multiple community types, user relationships, configurable workflows, high notification volume, third-party integrations, fragmented data, and the need to launch new modules without breaking existing ones. The API required stronger security, stable authorization, audit trails, and protection of users’ personal data.
Solution
Designed the backend as a modular platform with configurable roles, permissions, user profiles, groups, relationships, workflows, and notifications. Split the business logic into clear domains: community management, HR, learning, CRM, job portal, volunteer projects, data collection, and reporting. Added queues and background jobs for heavy operations, plus configurable entities and extensible APIs for client-specific deployments. Strengthened security with validation, access control, audit logs, and stricter personal data handling.
Results
The platform became easier to deploy for different client types, including corporate teams, learning communities, alumni networks, and professional associations. New workflows and modules could be launched faster, communication and statuses became more transparent, and manual community management work was reduced. The system gained a more reliable backend foundation for scaling, integrations, and further development of community features.
